Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner
Select the right kind of firewood to minimize soot and creosote buildup.

Choosing the Right Wood
For a cleaner flue, choose seasoned hardwoods like oak, maple, or hickory. These types of wood burn hotter and produce less creosote, a tar-like substance that can build up in your chimney and increase the risk of a fire.
Avoid burning green or softwoods, such as pine, which contain high sap levels that contribute to faster creosote accumulation. Properly seasoned wood should have a moisture content of around 20% or less.
Proper Storage of Firewood
Store your firewood correctly to ensure it is ready to burn and keeps your chimney clean. Stack wood off the ground with a cover over the top to protect from rain while allowing airflow on the sides to further dry the wood.
Avoid piling wood directly against your house or on soil, as this can invite pests and slow down the seasoning process. A well-ventilated woodshed or storage rack is ideal for this purpose.
Burning Techniques
Using the right burning techniques can also help keep your flue cleaner. Always start fires with dry kindling and ensure adequate airflow by leaving the damper fully open when the fireplace is in use.
Avoid burning trash, cardboard, or painted wood, as these materials can increase soot and creosote buildup. Regular cleaning and a well-maintained chimney will also lessen the likelihood of flue obstructions.
